World Vision is setting up a response to the needs in Beirut, and have declared a Category II emergency and are seeking USD$5 million to reach 120,000 individuals of the 500,000 currently estimated in need of assistance from the explosion.

Initial assistance will provide:

• Basic needs (eg. food, household items, and hygiene supplies) for thousands of families who are now homeless and/or hosted in schools, and centers that have been set up by the local authorities.

• Temporary shelter provision and short term shelter repairs for families that have had their homes damaged. Assessments are ongoing but this could include simple repairs (e.g. windows) and preparation of alternative short term accommodation.

• Psychological First Aid to help children and families affected by the explosion.

• PPE will be needed to prevent additional spread of COVID 19 and reduce the impact on an overstretched health system.

Red Cross

LCCCL has just partnered with the Red Cross to help Lebanon. The humanitarian needs in Beirut, Lebanon are immense following the recent explosion, which has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in a country that is currently hosting the largest number of refugees per capita and is struggling with environmental and economic uncertainties.

Some of the most urgent needs on the ground include:

Emergency medical services, such as transportation to get critical patients to hospitals for urgent care;

Shelter, food and water; and, personal protective equipment as responders provide life-saving care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lebanese Red Cross and the Palestine Red Crescent Lebanon Branch are working to coordinate emergency relief efforts to get help to the people affected as quickly as possible.

The Lebanese Canadian Cultural Club of London is supporting Red Cross efforts on the ground.
